In this MLA format essay it will articulate a very precise thesis, will adhere very carefully to the structure suggested in the assignment, will quote appropriately, and will demonstrate a familiarity with the terms used in our discussions( such as symbol, setting, plot, character, and harmony). Use very specific evidence from the works, and always indicate the source of that evidence. Compare and contrast “Sonny’s Blues” by James Baldwin and “A Doll’s House” by Henrik Ibsen. Begin your answer by considering the characters’ relationship to the world. What kind of word do the characters inhabit, and how do the characters relate to that world? How are the characters defined by that world? Next examine the changes that the characters undergo throughout the work. DO the characters move toward harmony or away form it? Do the characters perceive the changes clearly? Does the writer (and, by extension, the reader) view the changes positively or negatively? Finally, how are the characters’ fates at the conclusions of the works inevitable, given the actions and personalities of the characters? This assignment is character-based, but symbol setting and plot may be relevant here, so discuss them when necessary. Thesis must embrace both works and your structure must be carefully parallel. I also uploaded an image of how the paragraphs should be structured without the thesis. Either the left column or right column can be used.
