IV. Literature Review (13-20 pages) This assignment provides an opportunity for the student to gain an in-depth knowledge about either (1) a health care policy issue (e.g., health care costs, physician or nurses shortage, prescription drug costs, financing long-term care, managed care, the future role of hospitals, medical tourism, comparison of public, nonprofit, and profit hospitals or nursing homes, health care insurance, equity issues, and access to care, etc.) OR (2) about a past or present health care reform at a local, state, or national level and lessons learned (e.g., Health Care Reform for Medicare and/or Medicaid; President Clintons Proposal for Health Care Reform in 1993; George W. Bushs Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement and Modernization Act of 2003; Obamas Affordable Care Act of 2010; Medical Malpractice Reform; Employer Mandate under the Affordable Care Act of 2010) through a critical review and analysis of peer-reviewed research articles/government reports/historical documents/books, etc. A historic account of events from Wikipedia/Internet sources when it comes to health care reforms is not acceptable. EVALUATION CRITERIA: 3. Literature Review Paper (38 points) Outcomes Criteria Points Health Care Policy Competencies The student demonstrates knowledge about a specific health care policy issue or health care reform (explaining/defining/describing the issue or reform and its importance, as well as other related to it concepts, theories, laws, trends, and/or related historic and/or political events). 16 Critical Thinking, Problem- Solving, & Research Skills The student demonstrates critical thinking skills (discussing articles major purposes, methodology if any, major findings; acknowledging studies major limitations; evaluating the significance of studies results for policy decision-making; summarizing major policy implications). The student demonstrates problem solving skills (describing an appropriate and/or innovative health care policy solution or combinations of policy solutions.). The student demonstrates research skills (critically evaluating, organizing, synthesizing and interpreting data or information from research articles and other sources). 16 Written Communication Skills The paper has a clear and logical structure, well-developed paragraphs, use of subtitles, and a correct word choice. There are no grammar, punctuation, and spelling errors. APA style is used. The paper is 13-20 pages long (the paper can exceed the number of pages but should not go less than the minimum number of pages). Meets all other paper formatting guidelines. The analysis is informed by no less than 15 research sources. 6 Total Points 38 Paper Formatting Guidelines ? All papers should be typed and double-spaced with 1″ margins on all sides. You should use a clear font that is highly readable. APA recommends using 12 pt. Times New Roman font. ? Insert page numbers flush right at the top. ? Include a title page that shows the paper title (no more than 12 words in length is recommended), students name, course name, and institutional affiliation. The title page will not count towards the minimum number of pages for the assignment. ? Including an abstract is optional and will not count towards the minimum number of pages for the assignment. ? Include a reference list. All sources should be cited in APA style. The reference list will not count towards the minimum number of pages for the assignment.
